Where will we be?
Death Blues is a study of interest, of quests and seeking, of fundamental drives, of hopes, and it is about the impermanence that counters this energy, the unexpected pivot that takes us to another place, or no place, or someplace; a place where all the aforementioned things make no real difference, because they are not any more. And that situation can turn our attention away from “tomorrow” or “someday” toward right now.
Even this moment is fleeting, but it is something we can somehow recognize because we are in it. Death Blues has captured and presented various thoughts, images, and ideas around this idea, and will present this urgency, bliss, grasping, and release in a series of concerts featuring a 7-person group. Using both traditional and untraditional instrumentation and playing styles, the material for these events nods to both Americana and world music while reveling in raw, hard, repetitive minimalism via maximal approach. If the moment is important, then this music bellows for it to never end.
But it will.
This short string of shows in usual and unusual places leads to a penultimate finale at North Carolina’s Hopscotch Festival, which then culminates in a multi-sensory finale at the 2-day Alverno Presents event: Death Blues (no time like the present) in November.
These dates may be the only chance to see this music performed in this arrangement.
